3:45PM: Elementary introduction to the Weil Conjectures

I will start with finite fields, introduce the zeta function, and discuss the case of Grassmannians, which leads nicely to the functional equation. This talk will be aimed at graduate students with only a basic background in algebra.

5:00PM: The diagonal problem

I will discuss the question of which smooth varieties $X$ have the property that the diagonal subscheme in $X \times X$ is the zero scheme of a section of a vector bundle of rank equal to $\dim X$. This is based on a joint paper of mine with Piotr Pragacz and V. Pati. The talk will be accessible to graduate students with some knowledge of algebraic geometry.
