3:45PM: Convex Algebraic Geometry

Bernd Sturmfels

The aim of this talk is to introduce a new NSF-funded FRG project titled ``Semidefinite Optimization and Convex Algebraic Geometry''. We shall explain what is meant by the title of this lecture, discuss results from a recent paper with Jiawang Nie on ``Matrix cubes parametrized by eigenvalues'', and present some open problems which might interest students of (classical, complex) algebraic geometry.
