3:45PM: An application of binomial primary decomposition in algebraic statistics

Alex Fink

This talk will have two components, both of them of combinatorial flavour. I'll begin with an overview of binomial ideals and of their primary decompositions: the main theorem is that the components are also binomial. I'll then discuss the appearance of binomial ideals in algebraic statistics. For one particular class of binomial ideal relating to conditional independence, we have a graph-theoretic interpretation of the primary decomposition; I'll present this and, time permitting, a generalisation.
